The Goethe-Institut Gulf Region cordially invites you to its Movie Night presenting – in anticipation of the Soccer World Championship – “The Miracle of Bern” by Sönke Wortmann (2003).

Summer, 1954: The Soviet Union is sending its prisoners of war home. Among them is Richard, father of the quiet, soccer-loving 11-year-old Matthias. His return casts a shadow over the once-happy family. Matthias has long found a surrogate father in the local soccer player Helmut Rahn who has been chosen to play in the German team in the World Cup in Bern/Switzerland. Matthias’ passion for the game and his fighting spirits bring father and son together and as the final match of the World Cup begins a little miracle of love and generosity leaps across borders to help another miracle occur.

By realising the film “The Miracle of Bern” director Sönke Wortmann fulfilled a personal dream. He always wished to be a soccer player and played professional soccer for three years. But he could not pursue his dream further and decided to study directing at the University of Television and Film Munich. “The Miracle of Bern” is his biggest success so far. The film is considered to be the most successful German cinema movie of the year 2003. During the Soccer World Championship in Germany in 2006 he created another movie dedicated to soccer: he accompanied the German national team and created the two hour long documentary “Germany. A summer’s tale”.

Non-speakers of German, respectively learners of German are very welcome: The film is shown in German with English subtitles.
