Hot Property in House Music: Nic Fanciulli
28/07/2010
IDJ Magazine claimed Nic Fanciulli as “house music’s hottest property” and his swift, seemingly smooth ride to global superstardom has been well documented by clubbers and industry greats alike. Having impressed DJs like Deep Dish, Pete Tong and John Digweed during his residency at home-town venue ClubClass with his deep, techy and acid sounds and gave him opportunity to fully develop his sets and learn how to please a crowd. Since then his portfolio has included residencies and shows worldwide, working with brands including Space in Miami and Ibiza, Il Muretto in Venice and in UK clubs such as Ministry of Sound and The End. He also produces under Skylark and Buick Project, releases from which have received acclaim from Radio 1 DJ Pete Tong, and he also releases under brand Renaissance. Infusion’s Selina chats with him about the grand old age of digital, playing with Carl Cox this summer in Ibiza and fashion disasters.
“Digital” has profoundly affected the musical world, how has it affected you?
I think at first I was totally against the idea of change. Records were the only things I knew at the time, so moving to CDs was a big change for me. Since then I haven’t looked backed, they improved every aspect of my DJing and I fully support new technology now.
Beyond music “digital” has become a way of life, with social media and non-stop communication. How has your participation in this world changed your life both publicly and privately?
I think before, magazines were the only way people could find out about DJs. I think this made it a lot harder to break through as the magazines were picking just a handful of DJs and pushing them forward each year. Now it’s become a case of "MY DATABASE IS BIGGER THAN YOUR DATABASE". The problem is a lot of DJs have had to follow this to keep up with things. For me, I’m just happy to get my music to whoever wants to listen to it.
A gig is always a give and take between artist and audience. What do you take home from a gig and what do you hope your audience does?
For me I play such a wide variety of music that each gig will be something different. I try to play as much new music and also to keep the balance happy with people that have paid to dance.
You will play at Space Ibiza this summer. Ibiza has always brought together people and artists from different walks of life and from all over the globe to experience something extraordinary. What do you think makes Ibiza so special?
I think Ibiza is one of the few places round the globe where people come together for the same thing. Year after year people come to enjoy their one or two weeks off work and forget about reality. That’s what makes it special.
The Carl Cox night at Space is called The Revolution Continues. What was your most revolutionary experience in the music scene? What do you want to do that is revolutionary? What would you change about the world if you could?
I think that is a tough question! All i can say is that I’m happy to be a part of Carl's Revolution!!!
