This workshop is intended to act as an introductory course to the process of bookbinding. It will be delivered through a series of demonstrations and practical exercises, intended to provide participants with the necessary skills to be able to create their own books. This is an excellent workshop for all artists, but particularly suitable for printmakers and paper makers.

Bookmaking is a creative technique, offering artists new ways to present their ideas, either for public display or personal use. Students will benefit from learning how to create a book as an official object that places artistic ideas and emotions into a definitive form.

The techniques of binding a hardcover book will be demonstrated and practiced, both to appreciate the unique value of an individually created book and to trigger the artists’ creativity into a new perspective. Consideration will be given to the choice of cover materials, paper, text and/or imagery, stitching, colours and techniques applied, and the impact that each of these has on the resulting artists book.

Each student will create their own book – which could be small or large in scale, consist of full or blank pages, and in which the content could be either general or personal. A demonstration of papermaking will be given during the course and students will be encouraged to incorporate hand-made paper into their work.

Each session will be scheduled as follows:
Part one 10.00 – 13.00
Lunch 13.00 – 14.00
Part two 14.00 – 16.00

A sandwich lunch will be provided

FEES: FULL COURSE FEES MUST BE PAID ON REGISTRATION
Tashkeel members: 1710 DHS per course
Non-members: 1900 DHS per course

MATERIALS:
Basic materials and equipment required for the workshop will be provided. Any additional materials required are to be purchased; limited quantities may be available from Tashkeel or directly from the workshop leader. Participants are advised to bring their own aprons.
